Dr. Aileen O'Kane

Aileen qualified as a medical doctor in University College Dublin in 1970 and practised medicine until the mid 90s. In the early 90s she became ill and through a growing awareness of what was going on in her own life she came to realize that illness is a "dis-ease" of our whole being - body, mind and spirit. Her own inner journey and search for a more holistic healing model lead her after some years to Ayurveda.

"I knew that in Ayurveda I had found something for which I had been searching. Ayurveda found me as it were."

In the mid and late 90s Aileen studied Ayurveda in USA, London and India and has been practising Ayurveda since 2000. In 2004 she qualified as a Craniosacral Therapist at the Karuna Institute in England and in 2008 she qualified as an Emotional Freedom Technique Therapist. Aileen works in her hometown of Armagh, in Omagh and in Dublin at The Healing House.

Aileen is available for one to one consultations of Ayurveda, Craniosacral Therapy and/or Emotional Freedom Technique by appointment.

Ayurveda, meaning "knowledge of life", is about living in harmony with ourselves and the natural world. Body, mind and spirit are one in this ancient healing system which dates back to 5,000 years BC.

According to Ayurveda each of us inherits a unique proportion of the energies Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is space and air, Pitta is fire and water, and Kapha is water and earth. Our particular combination of these energies gives us our individual physical and psychological characteristics, our Constitution. When our energies are in balance we are healthy. When toxic impurities build up in our bodies from imbalanced energies and a weakened digestive system we become unwell and susceptible to disease. Many factors, internal and external, create balance or imbalance in our lives; our thoughts and emotions, our lifestyles and our diets, our relationships, the weather and the seasons etc. Ayurveda is an intelligent system which explains how these factors affect us and what we need to do to create balance and remain healthy. What is appropriate for each or us is different depending on our Constitution and imbalance.

Ayurveda recognises that each individual is unique. When illness does occur Ayurveda will focus on the energetic imbalances and toxicity behind the disease. Restoration of imbalance and elimination of toxins facilitates self-healing. Chronic disorders like digestive problems, IBS, arthritis, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma and many other illnesses can respond favourably to Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is not a substitute for western medicine but can work well alongside it and in many situations can work very well on its own. There will still be situations in which drug therapy and surgery are the treatments of choice.

So why would you choose an Ayurvedic consultation?

You may come because you want to discover you Constitution and you would like to know what to do to remain healthy. You may come with symptoms but no specific disease or you may be looking for help to treat a specific illness.

During an initial consultation a detailed history is taken and your constitution and imbalances are determined. A physical examination includes ayurvedic pulse to help you understand your Constitution and imbalances. You will be given dietary, detoxification and lifestyle advice. Often ayurvedic remedies will be prescribed. In many cases emotional factors which are contributing to imbalances will need to be addressed.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a profound healing form which assists the body's natural capacity for self-repair. The work can address physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or simply help to develop well-being, health and vitality. It is safe in all age groups from the new-born to the very old, during pregnancy and with those who have severe pain and injury. Throughout life our bodies are subjected to physical and psychological trauma. If the trauma is significant it remains in our bodies as areas of contracted tissue, and this can present over time as physical or psychological symptoms. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) helps to release these deeply held patterns of contraction in our tissues.

CST is a gentle therapy which does not use any manipulation. Therapists use their hands to detect and help release tensions by following subtle movements within the body. During a session you, as the client, remain fully clothed and lying on a treatment table. You may experience internal movements in the tissues e.g. tingling, heat, pulsation etc. You may make physical movements or experience emotional release, or a session may be very quiet and deeply relaxing. Once tensions begin to release there is generally an improved sense of well-being.

In the case of newborn and infant children, very often their systems have been disturbed during delivery and this can be corrected before any problem, such as irritability, feeding problems, colic etc., develops. Such conditions, if they do develop, can be treated by CST.

Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT is at the forefront of the new Healing Movement. The underlying principle of EFT is that with all emotional and physical problems there is a disruption in the body's energy system.

EFT is a profoundly simple technique which involves tapping on certain energy points on the face and upper body while tuning into a specific problem - whether traumatic event, a phobia, physical pain, emotion etc.

This physical pressure on the energy points, while voicing the problem, works to clear the energy disruption from the body.

While EFT is a therapy taught and applied by professionals, it is easy to learn and use personally. It is a very empowering tool that can, over time, help shift long established patterns, beliefs, pains etc.

EFT is not an alternative to conventional therapy but can work alongside many forms of therapy and shift blocks that are preventing the body's natural ability to heal.
